Hi,

We decided to devote a specific forum to neuropathies instead of including it among other complications in the 'complications from diabetes' forum. Thanks for participating!

Wet Behind The Ears
Wet Behind The Ears

Hi i am new at this so be patient. I have had this burning, aching, numb feet over 6 years now. I have seen at least a dozen Drs. Everyone of them has told me i had different things, so i went to 2 different neuroligist and each said i had none of the things the other Drs. said i had. But neither of those Drs. said what i did have. I wore a cast on my left foot, which was the worst of the two feet, for 6 weeks using up a lot of my sick time from work. I have about six different types of ortodics that just killed my feet to wear them. I was on medications too, neorotin was one, but it didn't help and the side effects were very bad. I was put on different arteritis meds( vioxx, celebrex). I was put on oxicontin, 40 mg. which did a pretty good job of controling the pain, but low and behold the Dr. didn't want me addicted so he cut the dosage and it didn't help much at all. So he tried a couple other pain meds. but nothing help, so i just stopped taking anything. The pain got so bad in both feet that i took and early retirement, but just 6 months later i hads to go back for insurance. The pain is still there, but i have to work for the insurance, i did a surch and found this sight. i will be trying ALA 100 mgs. today, but i don't know how much to use, nor do i know about how long it should take if this is going to help me at all. I mean i don't want to take it for a long time to find out its not doing me any good so i can be trying to find something else. Any one have answers?
Walt.

Hi, Walt. Very sorry to hear you're having such problems with your feet. I don't know what to advise you, since my feet only give me minor problems so far (and I do try to keep them happy with walking, big running shoes with orthotic inserts, padded socks, elevation, 100 mg ALA morning and night when I remember), but maybe you'll get some more answers soon. Try posting your question on the Type 2 Forum, which usually gets more action. Good luck, and hope to see you over there!

There are many good sites out there talking about ALA, but the suggested dose for very bad feet is approx. 600 MG per day taken 200MG three times per day.

There does not seem to be much in the way of risk except if you are diabetic in which case it is possible that it could lower your blood sugar which means if you are taken insulin you may want to consult your doctor or monitor you Blood sugar more carefully.

Thank you for the information, looks like its going to cost a pretty good penny taking those. Do you know about how long it takes to start feeling better?

I have leg pain. I have been a diabetic for 6 years now. The leg pain has just started in the last 6 months. I have told my doctor but he has not recommended any solutions.
Does any of you have "leg pain". I cannot walk or stand for any length of time. I wish I could find someone that could help me. Or someone that has the same problem, and what they are doing for it.
Thanks

I truly understand your pain, I have been diabetic for about 3yrs,maybe or more years, because none of my doctors didnt tell me anything different, until my mother was dianogised with diabetes, then he tested me.My trouble started when I fell at work the doctor did some test, they found out that i had nephropathy.I have been on a walker for almost a year, I have fell so many times that I have never damage to my right knee, and I am now in physical therpay.Iam now on Lyrica for the pain, it is a very good pain killer. how this will help you.

Many docs try neurotin, cymbalta, lyrica and or amatyriptline. For some these meds work other it doesnt. There is some good vitamins that seem to help and many that are diabetic use that is evening primrose and alpha lopic acid. There fairly cheap and many say it helps. Since your doc didnt do a thing for you something needs to be done. Its very painful I know I have had diabetic pereperal neuropathy for over 16 yrs. Good luck hope you get some relief.

I have had peripheral neuropathy in my right foot from traumatic injury since 1993. As of 2000, the discomfort in this foot, skin changes, and the temperature problem in my right foot have resolved with the use of magnetic insoles. I have experienced no side effects from these insoles and am no longer on any medication for this condition.
